Locke Residence

Seattle, WA

After 30+ years of living in this mid-century modern classic designed by Paul Hayden Kirk, the owner decided it was time to update and improve the longevity of the home. Our approach to this unique house was to retain the original design’s spare modern qualities while enriching the material palette and enhancing the open plan through increased transparency between the primary spaces. The removal of several interior walls and the addition of a large sliding door in the dining room provided greater visual and physical connections between interior and exterior, and between the dining space and kitchen. The new finishes-including rift- cut white oak cabinetry, back- painted glass, milestone flooring, and ceramic tile- complement the existing house and respond to the client’s preference for a lighter, softer palette. As part of the remodel, the client also commissioned us to design a new display case to house her growing collection of ceramic and glass sculptures.
